In late December 2022, Lulu and I went on a walk in the Berkeley Hills. It had just rained –– based on how fast we paced, you’d think we were trying to slip on the globs of mud marking the path. One of us, I can’t remember who, stopped where the neighborhood trailhead met the street. We were both stuck in something heavy.

So Lulu drove us into town, bought me a blue notebook and for her a chargeable point-and-shoot camera. We dedicated ourselves to daily exchange: every day for a year, I sent Lulu a kernel of writing, and she sent me a photo in return.

The contents of our asynchronous email thread are gathered here. Specific time and location are marked along the conversation. Some weeks we were together, and others, quite far apart.

These daily dispatches form a travelog, a twelve-month telegram. The sounds of two plastic cups connected by a string! Or maybe the longest-winded love letter to ever exist.
